Dormo Peak is located in Taplejung district in the eastern region of Nepal, near the world’s third highest mountain, Mt. Kanchendzonga range. The peak straddles the border between Tibet, Sikkim and Nepal. Although it is 6855m tall, it has not be categorized as an expedition peak, not a trekking peak.
The journey to Dormo peak is a long one, requiring bus rides from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and then to Basantpur from where the trek begins. The treks is mostly through sparsely settlements of villages that are home to Rai and Limbu people or Kirat people. Kirat people are renowned for their unique culture and cuisine. Much of the trek route passes through Kanchendzonga National Reserve replete with alpine shrubs, meadows, grassland and forests that are home to such endangered species as Red Panda, Black Bear, wolves and mountain goats.
The base camp is set up at Pang Pema from where it is just a few hours climb to the summit.Climbing the mountain will require skillful use of ropes, ice axe and walking through glaciers.
The Peak offers a magnificent panorama of eastern Himalayan ranges including khumbakarna(7711m), Kanchunjunga(8586m), Yalung kag(8055m) and Kirat Chuli(7362m)
You will be met at the airport by our Him Ganga Treks representative and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. Rest at the hotel and briefing about the trip. There should be time to explore the city’s many charms on your own too. Overnight (O/N) in Kathmandu (breakfast included).
Departure at dawn to reach the national airport. The registration hall offers a special atmosphere that combines good-natured character, administrative rigor and excitement of the next departures … all in the middle of baggage piled up on both sides counters … Flight (subject to weather hazards … ) to the south to reach the border town of Bhadrapur . We go directly by private bus to the Taplejung, located about 9-10 hours drive, between the plains of Terai and the first hills covered with terraced crops and subtropical vegetation. We then continue between the tea crops and the winding road to the hamlet of Taplejung.
We take a jeep from Taplejung to Chhirwa and trek to Sekhatum which takes around 5-6 hrs. We cross several small village along the way and cross several suspension bridge before we reach our destination.
We trek from Sekhathum to Amjilasa which takes around 4-5 hrs. We cross several suspension bridge and see several waterfall before reaching our destination. After crossing the last suspension bridge we have to trek uphill until we reach our destination.
Today, we walk through forested trail filled with rhododendrons and bamboo, before ascending to Gyabla. We also come across a big waterfall on the opposite side of the river on our way to Gyabla. Making a steep ascent and then a descent, we arrive in Gyabla. Overnight in Gyabla.
Gyabla to Ghunsa. Ghunsa is like the capital of Kanchenjunga. It’s a large Sherpa village, on the Ghunsa River, with a very old monastery. Accommodation is very nice and so are the meals. There is telephone and internet facilities available but as of Nov 2015, it took almost an hour to send two email. Lunch in Phole, then a 3 hrs walks from Gyabla. From Phole it is 1 hrs to Ghunsa. There are many Tibetan refugees in Phole and you can buy excellent souvenirs.In Phole and Ghunsa visit the Geluk and Ningmapa Tashi Chholing Monastery 18 century.
To adjust with the thinning air, we take a short hike to the opposite side of Ghunsa Khola with a gain of about 400m. After returning from the hike, we can spend rest of the day exploring the ancient village of Ghunsa visiting monasteries and learning about their Buddhist culture and tradition. Overnight in Ghunsa.
Today, we begin our trek entering the forested path along the south bank of Ghunsa Khola and passing several Mani walls and Chortens along the way. We also trek through several scree slopes and some glacial moraines to reach the Tibetan settlement of Khangpachen from where we can get the stunning view of the north face of Jannu (7710m). Overnight in Khangpachen.
We hike towards Jannu BC and come back to Khambachen which takes around 5-6 hrs. Theres a Limbu temple near Jannu BC.
Leaving behind Khangpachen, we follow the trail on the left side of Kanchenjunga Glacier. We hike along a high plateau to reach the campsite of Lhonak. From Lhonak, we can see the panoramic view of massive mountain peaks like Wegde Peak (6802m), Mera Peak (6364m), Nepal Peak (7177m), Twins (7350m), and many others. Overnight in Lhonak.
Today, we head towards Kanchenjunga Base Camp following the trail along the glaciers on the northern ridges . The camp is also known as Pang Pema from where we get the mesmerizing and spectacular view of Mt Kanchenjunga (8586m) along with the skyline filled with snow-capped mountain ranges bordering Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet. Overnight in Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
Early morning we have to Ascend Dhromo Ri and descend to Pang Pema.850m ascend 5-6 hrs to go up and descend 2 hrs.We don’t need cranpons and iceaxe.
From Lhonak it is 8 hrs walk back to Ghunsa, mostly downhill, back to civilization. Don’t forget to collect any equipment left there. We usually lunch in Kambachen on the way down and follow the same route we used to come up.Khangdoma water fall and thousand cave of limbu caste.
From Ghunsa to Selle all the way ascend in the Rodhodendron forest.Ghunsa valley, Phole, Ghyabla Yak kharka view.
From Selele we descend to Tseram. We cross the Selele pass. You can view Mt. Jannu on the way. After crossing Selele pass , we descend downwards we see several small ponds on our way down before reaching Tseram
To enjoy an exceptional view of the third highest mountain in the world, we are off to a great acclimatization race back and forth over Tseram, along the Yalung Glacier. Early departure in a cool atmosphere. Along the way, the white rocks of Kabru are reflected in the waters of two small lakes. We reach the edge of the moraine of the mighty Yalung Glacier where it is not uncommon to see great bharals, a goat Himalayan also called blue sheep, graze the alpine steppe. A tea shop, located in the long valley of ablation that borders the moraine is welcome for a good break before reaching the Oktang belvedere at 4700 meters , at the foot of Kangchenjunga 8586 m . The base camp of his normal track is further down the glacier. Its gigantic south-west face stands on 3000 m high. The summit was climbed by only 250 people. Back to Tseram camp.
Enjoy mountain view breakfast and head towards Torong Ding. It takes around 3-4 hrs. The trail is fairly easy and we walk along the bank of river and through forest.Chendu water fall.
It’s a relaxing day. The stage is both short and beautiful, while panoramic balcony trail , with full views of the most prestigious peaks of the region: the Jannu , the Kyabru and the huge Kangchenjunga . In the two villages we cross, Limbus, Sherpas, Rais and Gurungs live side by side. You will notice the big fields of millet, a cereal that the villagers ferment to prepare the local beer, and it falls . She is drinking with a straw in large bamboo cups. To test. Arrive in early afternoon at Yamphuding camp, official entrance to Kangchenjunga Conservation Area.
We trek to Happu Khola which takes around 7-8 hrs.In the morning we take a Jeep to Ilam.YamphuDing to Happu Khola we can see Mt Jannu,Millet filled,Rice filled,Cardamon and Gooseberry forest Khebang to Happu Khola descend and Ascend.Sherpa,Rai,Limbu and Chettri villages,
We drive through the Cardamon plants,Tea plants and Broom plants to Ilam.We can see Mt Jannu and Mt Kanchenjunga view from the our journey all the way of Ilam.
If the weather is clear we can see the all the mountains of f Mt Kanchenjunga Range to Mt Everest Range and Mt Makalu.
